Igor Kucinic: a silhouette artist among your guests

My name is Igor Kucinic and I have been cutting silhouettes by hand since 1996. I come from graphic design, which I studied in London, and that is where my way of working comes from: saying a lot with very little. A black shape on white paper, no sketch beforehand, and the person is recognisable at once.

Before moving into events I spent fifteen years cutting in busy tourist areas of Spain and Europe, in front of strangers waiting for their portrait on the street. That gave me speed and confidence: today each silhouette takes me under two minutes, an average of 35 an hour. Since 2010 I have worked only at events, close to a thousand so far.

At your event I work standing, among the guests, with no stage and no technical set-up. I look for the likeness in the shape of the whole head, not just the nose or the chin. I cut the paper folded, so every guest takes their profile home twice over: black on white on one side of the card, white on black on the other. No printed frames: the white around the silhouette is the best frame. At the bottom, your company logo or the name of the celebration.
